The origins of birth stones & zodiac crystals

Birthstones have a rich history and mythology. The first association of a special gem with each month of the year was recorded in the Christian Bible in the story of Exodus. The original breastplate of the High Priest of the Hebrews was said to have contained 12 gems which represented the 12 months of the year.

Precious stones have also been found in the ruins of Babylon and in the tombs of ancient Egyptian and Chinese rulers.

There are essentially three main ways of classifying birthstones:

• Traditional birthstones arose from Tibetan origin in the 1600’s when astrology began to thrive. Other lists of traditional birthstones come from the Hebrew, Roman, Arabic and Hindu cultures.
• Modern birthstones originated from a list created in 1912 by the American National Association of Jewellers, and is now widely accepted.
• Mystical birthstones which describe the healing powers of crystals using new age ideals.

Determining the appropriate zodiac sign crystal or gemstone through the use of astrology depends on the position of planets at the moment of one’s birth. If the influence of a certain planet is considered ‘disturbing’, it is recommended that the person wears a particular crystal or gemstone to diminish or neutralise these negative influences. Zodiac signs have accumulated more crystals over the years, some replacing stones which are no longer available, some coming from birth months and others selected because of how close they are thought to vibrate to a particular sign.

Some people view their birth month or zodiac crystals very seriously, and some view them in a fun and light hearted manner. Either way, your birthstone is something you should wear or carry with pride – it has a long worldwide heritage.
