Six steps to soothe your soul

In this fast paced world we live in, we can sometimes end up feeling a little disconnected. That disconnection can be from our loved ones, but it can also be from ourselves. If you’re feeling a little lost in the daily grind and would like to soothe your soul by reconnecting with it; here are 6 simple steps you can take to get back in touch with yourself.

ONE – Venture out into nature

Mother Nature is beautiful and can do wonders for you if you’re in need of some reinvigoration. Try taking a walk and reconnect with her. Listen to the weird and wonderful sounds that come from the birds, animals or even from the wind rustling the leaves on the trees. Leave your phone at home, breathe and take it all in.

TWO – Unplug

We are constantly surrounded by devices, whether it be our mobile phones, computers or tvs. They are great for staying in touch but we can all get a little too caught up in the online world that we forget about the real world. Take time for yourself by unplugging, logging out and switching off. Have a real conversation with another person; don’t sit on the couch scrolling through your news feed.

THREE – Write

There’s a writer in all of us, some of us are just a little more practised than others. Writing, whether it is fiction or non-fiction, can be very therapeutic for the soul. Write down your thoughts or feelings, create a character or a whole new world. Write to rid yourself of negative energy and feel the weight lift from your shoulders. You never know, you could write a bestseller!

FOUR – Laugh & laugh loud

They say that laughter is the best medicine. It can work wonders for the soul by relieving tension and pent up frustrations. The world won’t look so grim when you’re laughing with every fibre of your being. Catch up with your best friend or watch a funny movie, do anything that starts as a giggle fit and leaves you in stitches.

FIVE – Dance

Just Shake it off and feel great while you’re doing it. Move your body, jump around, wave your arms in the air and pretend you just don’t care. Get your blood flowing and your heart rate up. You’re alive and that’s a great thing! Raise those endorphins by dancing to your favourite song.

SIX – Pay it forward

If you’ve never experienced the joy of seeing happiness in someone else while knowing that you may have played a small part in creating it, then I highly recommend giving it a go. It will warm your soul. Doing something for another, even as small as holding the door open or helping an elderly person or child cross a busy road, might be the kindness they need to brighten their day.

While these steps won’t fix all problems (for serious issues seek out professional help from a doctor or therapist) they may be helpful in relieving stress from day to day life.
